Humans, Machines, and the Spaces Between: Designing Workplaces Where People and Robots Both Thrive

As robotics moves from controlled environments into workplaces, buildings, campuses, healthcare facilities, and public spaces, the success of adoption depends on more than technical capability. It depends on how well people, machines, data, and physical environments are designed to work together. 

This breakout session will explore how robotics-enabled digital twins, sensor intelligence, and AI-driven spatial analytics can be leveraged to identify workplace bottlenecks and help organizations create safer, more adaptive, and more human-centered workplaces. Using deployment findings from VirBrix as an anchor, including 3D Fusion capabilities enhanced with support from the Ontario Centre of Innovation’s Critical Industrial Technologies initiative, the session will examine how physical layout adjustments, occupancy insights, and spatial analytics transform buildings and operational spaces into living intelligence platforms that support both people and autonomous systems.

Rather than focusing only on the robot, the session will focus on the “spaces between”: the workflows, data models, safety considerations, trust factors, infrastructure decisions, and adoption strategies that determine whether robotics succeeds at scale.
